Ellen’s Stardust Diner Hosts Miss Subways Reunion
60 FORMER MISS SUBWAYS TO CELEBRATE LAUNCH OF NEW BOOK AND TRANSIT MUSEUM EXHIBITION, “MEET MISS SUBWAYS: NEW YORK’S BEAUTY QUEENS 1941-76″
Ellen’s Stardust Diner will host a reunion of roughly 60 former Miss Subways for a cocktail reception November 13th from 2-4:30pm. Owned by Ellen Hart, a former Miss Subway herself, Ellen’s Stardust Diner is a destination 1950′s-themed eatery located in the heart of the theater district (1650 Broadway) and boasts one of the largest collections of Miss Subways memorabilia anywhere. The reunion comes as part of the celebration for “Meet Miss Subways: New York’s Beauty Queens 1941-76,” a new book and exhibition at the New York Transit Museum running Oct. 23-March 25. To commemorate the occasion, a vintage NYC “Honeymooners Bus” will be parked outside Ellen’s and photo ops will be available.
In addition to reconnecting dozens of Miss Subways, the reunion will feature performances from Ellen’s Stardust Diner’s world-famous singing waitstaff (which has served as the launching ground for many vocalists who have gone on to success on Broadway and American Idol), and remarks from Hart, whose collection of original posters inspired the new book and exhibition.
It’s difficult to imagine a more quintessentially New York life than Hart’s. While still just a student at Jamaica High School in Queens, she was selected as a model for the MTA’s Miss Subway series in the spring of 1959. The promotion, which served as the inspiration for Miss Turnstile in Leonard Bernstein’s classic NYC musical ‘On the Town,’ placed Hart’s picture on trains all around the city and opened the doors for a singing, acting, and modeling career which found her gracing the covers of magazines and performing at high profile political and sporting events for the next three decades. In addition to the Stardust, Hart is also part owner of PJ Clarke’s at Lincoln Center and the owner of The Iridium, one of Manhattan’s premier live music destinations.
